The August 2023 Lahaina wildfire was the deadliest natural disaster in modern Hawaii history, destroying over 2,200 structures and exposing the critical vulnerability of West Maui's water infrastructure. Lahaina's leeward location means rainfall is limited — just 12 to 18 inches annually along the coast, increasing to 30 inches in the mauka areas toward Kaanapali and Kapalua.
